A stoner film with a premise of mistaken identity is not exactly original. Writer/director Dylan Meyer’s movie, THE WRONG GIRLS, starring Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat, is a chaotic mess about two roommates, Frankie and Molly, who are best friends in over their heads when Frankie (Stewart) is incorrectly pegged as a government agent.

Unable to pay their rent and almost out of weed --- which they smoke non-stop --- these two ‘wrong’ girls end up possessing a briefcase of valuable drugs which they try to sell at a party for Stanford University alums at the home of Martin Flynn (Tony Hale). His claim to fame as a student was constantly sticking his penis into any variety of party dip. Have I mentioned yet that THE WRONG GIRLS is inane --- and stupid?

The remainder of the movie has Frankie and Molly running from a bunch of Swedish thugs whose job it is to gain possession of the briefcase and its contents. Unfortunately, THE WRONG GIRLS is simply not amusing enough. David didn’t laugh once. And although I enjoyed a few moments of mirth, Meyer’s film should have been a helluva lot funnier.

Even the voices of Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani as Frankie and Molly’s two cats, Dio and GG, don’t help much in the laughter department. Nor does the presence of Kate McKinnon, who can always be counted on to provide a giggle or two. Geena Davis’ role is so inconsequential --- and her face shows it. She looks like she’s trying to figure out why she’s in this movie.

While Shawkat is perfectly cast as Molly, Stewart is not a good choice for Frankie. She doesn’t possess the same innate goofiness as Shawkat, which is what makes her so well-suited for the role of Molly. And, whatever becomes of Frankie’s doppelganger at the end of THE WRONG GIRLS?

Perhaps this film would be a whole lot more enjoyable if one was stoned while watching it. But, it should at least be somewhat amusing if you’re not.

A lot of high-profile film stars are part of THE WRONG GIRLS, and I wonder how many of them wish that wasn’t the case after seeing the finished version? Written and directed by Dylan Meyer, who happens to be married to one of her co-stars, Kristen Stewart, THE WRONG GIRLS commits the deadliest sin for a purported comedy --- it’s not funny.

The fact that two pot-smoking besties get a hold of some mysterious potion that’s supposed to change mankind is preposterous. A government agent believes he’s giving a briefcase to a young woman for delivery, but he actually gives it to Frankie (Stewart) who bears a strong resemblance to said woman. The question is: if this material is so powerful and potentially history-making, why would the man let it out of his sight so casually?

The two stoners decide to drink two bottles of the secret liquid which allows them to communicate telepathically. It also allows their two cats, Dio and GG (voiced by Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani) to communicate the same way. And of course, Frankie and her roommate Molly (Alia Shawkat) are pursued by a bunch of toughs who are trying to recover the secret concoction

I sat through our screening stone-faced (although maybe being stoned would have been better) and never cracked a smile. Not once. Although I will say that seeing SNL’s Kate McKinnon again is worth something.
