           THE BEAST OF MOSSY BOTTOM

JEANNE: It’s almost Halloween and everyone at Mossy Bottom Farm, along with the local townsfolk in Mossingham, is looking forward to the big day. The third installment in this series featuring the characters created by filmmaker Nick Park, SHAUN THE SHEEP: THE BEAST OF MOSSY BOTTOM showcases the same outstanding handcrafted stop-motion animation from Aardman based in the U.K.

 

The Flock has managed to grow a very impressive pumpkin patch on the farm. Timmy, the baby sheep, is quite anxious to carve a face into one of them, but before he is able, Farmer, in all of his clumsiness, ruins each and every pumpkin. Shaun (voiced by Justin Fletcher) is determined to grow even bigger specimens, so he creates a concoction overnight in his “lab”.

 

Meanwhile, Farmer is very excited about the hoedown on Halloween and wants to ask the local vet to be his date. He’s awfully self-conscious about his thinning hair, so when he finds Shaun’s discarded bottle filled with the new potion, he gives it a try --- with truly disastrous results.

Directed by Steve Cox and Matthew Walker from a screenplay by Mark Burton and Giles Pilbrow, SHAUN THE SHEEP: THE BEAST OF MOSSY BOTTOM is wonderfully entertaining for the entire family. It is laugh-out-loud funny --- and of course, as always --- it is wildly clever. Farmer is an absolute hoot --- it’s amazing he even makes it through a day. And his precious dog, Bitzer (voiced by John Sparkes), remains steadfastly loyal, always looking out for Farmer.

 

But, per usual, it’s the vet --- a smart, trustworthy woman --- who invariably saves the day. What she sees in Farmer is beyond comprehension, but in Mossingham pickings are probably slim. The most hilarious sequence demonstrates the length to which the farm animals will go to avoid her when she visits Mossy Bottom Farm to administer their shots. Downright hysterical…

 

Whether or not you’ve seen the previous two feature films, SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE (2015) or A SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE: FARMAGEDDON (2019), it matters not regarding your enjoyment of SHAUN THE SHEEP: THE BEAST OF MOSSY BOTTOM. Although I do recommend finding them and watching them --- you will not be disappointed.

OPINION: SEE IT NOW!

DAVID:  The creators of “Wallace & Gromit” and the “Shaun the Sheep” franchise have come up with another brilliant stop-motion animated comedy. The supremely funny SHAUN THE SHEEP: THE BEAST OF MOSSY BOTTOM has nary a word of spoken dialogue, only the usual grunts and groans, accompanied by superb facial expressions and body language. And of course, a plethora of visual effects.

 

The first half of this film, the third in the “Shaun the Sheep” series, is totally laugh-out-loud hilarious. The screenplay by Mark Burton and Giles Pilbrow, with direction by Steve Cox and Matthew Walker, takes place around Halloween. Pumpkins are a key element here, and many of the scenarios are reminiscent of Dr. Frankenstein and the laboratory where he created his monster. 

Small, but extremely clever, touches abound in virtually every scene. It’s easy to miss some along the way, thus requiring --- at the very least --- a second viewing of SHAUN THE SHEEP: THE BEAST OF MOSSY BOTTOM.
