JEANNE: Successful indie director Gregg Araki’s latest film, I WANT YOUR SEX, is a sometimes silly, often hilarious dramedy co-written by Araki and Karley Sciortino. Featuring Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman in the starring roles as Erika Tracy and Elliott, this raunchy 90-minute satire of BDSM and contemporary art will definitely have people talking.

I WANT YOUR SEX opens at the fabulous home owned by Erika Tracy, a renowned contemporary artist recognized for her provocative work. She is lifeless in the pool as Elliott, who is still reeling from a drunken stupor, jumps in to save her. The film then flashes back to 9 ½ weeks --- one must assume an homage to the 1986 erotic drama starring Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke --- when Elliott is off to interview for a job in Erika’s studio.

Very much to his surprise, Elliott is hired as an assistant. His first job is to chew pink gum for one of her pieces of art with Zap (Mason Gooding), a trust-fund baby who really doesn’t need to work. But after his first week, Elliott is summoned to Erika’s office where she proposes a sexual relationship. In acceptance he must crawl to her to demonstrate his submission.

As Elliott becomes more and more obsessed with Erika, his relationship with his girlfriend, Minerva (Charli XCX), who is always exhausted from studying, ends. He also loses his best friend and roommate, Apple (Chase Sui Wonders), when he insults her while trying to have a three-way with her and Erika.

Alone and broke, Elliott moves in with Zap. But following a disastrous exhibition opening at Erika’s studio, everyone, including Erika’s business manager, Vikktor (Daveed Diggs), is out of work. Facing an uncertain future, Erika summons Elliott to her home where the opening scene is played out in full.

Wilde has never been wilder --- and she’s an absolute scream as the nymphomaniac artiste. She is obviously comfortable in her own skin because she is frequently without clothes. Wilde seems comically blasé about Erika’s penchant for nudity, which adds another layer to her performance.

Plus, for some odd reason, she and Hoffman click. Here as Elliott, he does not come across as her type, but that’s what makes I WANT YOUR SEX so comical. Elliott is somewhat of a dweeb --- but he does follow Erika’s orders to the best of his ability. Hoffman, the son of Philip Seymour Hoffman, had his breakout role in LICORICE PIZZA (2021), and here he is perfectly cast as the naïve, always willing to please muse.

Wilde and Hoffman are not the only standouts in the cast. Gooding is particularly amusing as the rich, and very blunt, Zap. And Diggs doesn’t even have to open his mouth to get Vikktor’s point across --- he’s terrific.

Obviously, I WANT YOUR SEX is not a movie for the masses. David and I will be very careful when recommending it. But despite its bawdy frivolity --- and its tendency to be over the top --- Araki’s film is “wildly” entertaining.

OPINION: SEE IT NOW!

DAVID: Three words to describe I WANT YOUR SEX:original, inventive and sexy. And one bit of advice --- do not take your mother to see it.

Olivia Wilde lives up to her surname playing Erika Tracy, a manipulative, fast-talking and quite stunning blonde beauty. She’s an artist who hires Elliott (Cooper Hoffman) among a dozen applicants even though he’s somewhat of a nerd.

Hoffman is the son of Philip Seymour Hoffman and his performance is incredibly good. There are a plethora of surprises in this movie, and without going into detail, Elliott finds his life uprooted as he becomes more involved with Erika, despite the fact that she’s his boss. He’s even interrogated for murder by two detectives played by Margaret Cho and Johnny Knoxville.

Mason Gooding portrays Zap, an amusing gay character who happens to be --- ready for more nepotism? --- the son of Cuba Gooding Jr. Elliott has a female roommate, Apple (Chase Sui Wonders), and a girlfriend, Minerva (Charlie XCX).

But this film is all about Erika and Elliott and the intrigue they provide as I WANT YOUR SEX moves briskly along. Directed by veteran indie filmmaker Gregg Araki and co-written by him and Karley Sciortino, I WANT YOUR SEX has been a popular addition to a variety of film festivals.
