JEANNE: In a word, Disney’s mostly live-action MOANA is breathtaking. Adapted from Disney Animation’s 2016 film, Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Maui, the shapeshifting demigod who accompanies Moana, played here with gusto by Catherine Laga’aia, on her death-defying escapade.
The screenplay by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller is basically exactly the same as the animated version, but the live action, along with the absolutely stunning vistas courtesy of Hawaii, set this movie apart. Unless you have forgotten --- or somehow missed the 2016 animated film --- Moana is in line to rule Motunui Island after her father, Chief Tui (John Tui). And currently their island is facing a food shortage.
Moana has been forbidden to sail past the island’s barrier reef, but after being called by the ocean to restore the heart of Te Fiti, she escapes her home and sails off on her mission. Following an encounter with the vain and egotistical Maui, Moana coerces him to join her on this important journey.
Despite the fact that so many others loathe the idea of Disney making live-action movies of their most popular animated ones, MOANA is still a wonderful story that stands up to the scrutiny. And there is no denying that even though the original is a beautifully captivating movie, the cinematography here by Óscar Faura is worth the price of admission.
Plus, Laga’aia and Johnson are adorable together. She is incredibly talented and brings Moana to life in a very special way --- and her chemistry with Johnson is undeniable. He’s a hoot, as usual --- making the most of this role in a truly hilarious way.
The other cast standout is Rena Owen as Gramma Tala, Moana’s grandmother. She has quite a screen presence --- mesmerizing in fact --- and shares a lovely relationship with Laga’aia as Moana. Brilliant casting.
The naysayers will ask what’s the point, but for many children this version of MOANA will be an exciting movie-going experience. Beware, there are a few frightening scenes, so perhaps leave the toddlers at home.
