Our Review

TV Show:  THE FALCON AND THE                               WINTER SOLDIER

TV Series – EPISODE 3:                                    POWER BROKER

Jeanne: Still loving the relationship between Bucky (Sebastian Stan) and Sam (Anthony Mackie), and now we have Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) in the mix, which makes this series even that much better. He’s a pip, plus he has a private jet, so what’s not to like? The question is --- can Bucky and Sam trust him? I think we all know the answer to that.

Unbeknownst to Sam when Bucky visits Zemo in his German prison he manages to set up Zemo’s escape. Clever little devil. At first Sam isn’t thrilled, but he does come to realize that Zemo is probably the only one who can help them track down the Power Broker because of Hydra.

Fast forward on Zemo’s spiffy jet where he tells his butler in German to perform a smell test on the food found on board ---

and if it doesn’t pass, serve it to Bucky and Sam. Love the humor, which is as abundant in this installment as the first two.

Ending up in Madripoor, an island nation for rogues, the threesome finds Dr. Nagel (Olli Haaskivi), courtesy of Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp). She’s established herself very well in this gritty underbelly, but she’s never gotten over the fact that she’s a fugitive and Bucky got a pardon. She is one tough

broad --- and I love that in a girl.

Meanwhile, Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman) and her Flag-Smashers have recovered six months of supplies just sitting in a warehouse. They are determined to distribute them to the less fortunate, but those they left behind in chains are threatened when an explosion is set off. It seems to me that if you’re trying to help people --- all people --- and change the world, you wouldn’t leave anyone behind to burn to death. So, what is her deal?

And lastly, the new Captain America John Walker (Wyatt Russell) seems a little off. His frustration in not being able to find the Flag-Smashers and demanding respect for his new job --- and not getting it --- has him pretty cranky. Methinks he’s a ticking time bomb --- and not in a good way.

By far the best part of every episode of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” is the whip-smart writing with Bucky, Sam and now Zemo trading barbs. Creator Malcom Spellman continues to pique our interest with each installment --- and each new character. And now we know there will be another addition in Episode 4, but I’m not telling.

Opinion: See It Now!

David:  Episode 3: POWER BROKER swings through Munich, Berlin, Latvia and a rough place called Madripoor where open carry is a given. Or to put it another way, if you’re not carrying some kind of menacing looking weaponry --- you don’t belong.

Our intrepid duo, Sam (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky (Sebastian Stan), is now joined by Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) after his prison escape.  They team up in search of the latest Super Soldier serum created by Dr. Nagel (Olli Haaskivi). We know Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman) stole all 20 vials of the original batch to create her own army of Flag-Smashers who are still on the loose.

The trio is joined by the female killing machine Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), so the mayhem is early and often. Bucky shows off his hand-to-hand combat abilities against some supposedly tough hombres in Madripoor’s bar from hell. But “combat” implies a reasonably even fight and these guys never stand a chance against the Winter Soldier.

Highlights of this third episode include some fabulous vintage cars, prompting Sam to question if they’re starting their latest escapade via “Grand Theft Auto”. And Sam gets off another zinger sitting in the back of Zemo’s convertible asking Bucky, riding shotgun, “You’re not gonna move the seat up, are you?” It’s one-liners like this that keep the series from taking itself too seriously.

As at the end of each episode, we get a glimpse of the next surprise. Until next week…
