BEST PICTURE (WHO WILL WIN) (WHO SHOULD WIN)
Her View: AVATAR / THE HURT LOCKER
"Avatar" may have the brawn, with its spectacular special effects, but "The Hurt Locker" definitely has the brains. It's a tough, tense motion picture with all of the attributes of a Best Picture.
His View: THE HURT LOCKER / INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
A tough call, but Quentin Tarantino's gem had the more memorable scenes. Tarantino's brilliant script may have irritated some purists, but how can you forget the opening scene with Hans Landa (Waltz) and the farmer, or the bar scene with Diane Kruger?
BEST ACTOR
Her View: JEFF BRIDGES/ COLIN FIRTH
Don't get me wrong, Bridges does a great job, but I've always felt that it's easier to play an
alcoholic. Firth does such an exemplary job portraying a gay professor in the early 60's ---
truly an Oscar performance.
His View: JEFF BRIDGES /COLIN FIRTH
Bridges will be rewarded for an outstanding performance in "Crazy Heart" and for his career work, as the voters are wont to do. But Firth was incredible as a distraught gay lover in "A Single Man".
BEST ACTRESS
Her View: SANDRA BULLOCK / HELEN MIRREN
I actually thought Ms. Bullock did a fine job until I saw "The Last Station". Ms. Mirren blows
everyone else (except Streep) away as Tolstoy's ever-dramatic wife.
His View: SANDRA BULLOCK / SANDRA BULLOCK
Bullock will win for the same reasons as Bridges, and she was the centerpiece of a very popular film. But the best female performance of the year was Audrey Tautou in "Coco
Before Chanel", and she wasn't even nominated.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Her View: CHRISTOPH WALTZ / CHRISTOPH WALTZ
Not much to say here --- no one can beat Waltz's chilling performance. He's dead-on perfect!
His View: CHRISTOPH WALTZ / CHRISTOPH WALTZ
Waltz stole the show. "Basterds" would not be the same without him. This is a LOCK.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Her View: MO'NIQUE / MO'NIQUE
Like Waltz, no one can touch her --- she is simply outstanding in this role.
His View: MO'NIQUE / MO'NIQUE
Mo'Nique deserves the Oscar as the brutal mother of Precious, but I would have voted for another non-nominee, Natalie Portman in "Brothers".
BEST DIRECTOR
Her View: KATHRYN BIGELOW / KATHRYN BIGELOW
If she doesn't win, I'm never watching the Oscars again! Terrific film --- superb work as a director.
His View: KATHRYN BIGELOW / KATHRYN BIGELOW
Another tough call, as Tarantino is equally deserving. But "The Hurt Locker" takes on even greater importance considering it was directed by a woman.
BEST ANIMATED PICTURE
Her View: UP / UP
My absolute favorite film of the year --- I wish it could win the Oscar for Best Picture! Period!
His View: UP / UP
The four minute non-dialogue scene early on clinched the Oscar for this wonderful film.
